Matt Davidson is an exceptionally versatile, athletic outside back with an impressive dual-pathway pedigree across both elite 15-a-side and international Sevens rugby. Standing at 6’3″, Davidson pairs robust aerial capabilities and physical defensive coverage with the explosive pace and elite ball-handling skills demanded by the global Sevens circuit. Capable of making an impact at fullback, outside centre, or on the wing, he provides coaches with a dynamic, multi-positional threat.
Youth & Pathway: Matt’s rugby story began at his local club, Ayr RFC, where he progressed through the youth ranks before earning a call-up to the Scotland U20 squad. He featured prominently in the 2019 U20 Six Nations and the World Rugby U20 Trophy campaigns.
The Sevens Stage: Davidson successfully transitioned to the international short-form game, cementing a core spot with Scotland Sevens. He made his Commonwealth Games debut at Birmingham 2022, helping the squad to a hard-fought 6th place finish, and represented his country at the Rugby World Cup Sevens. He has since graduated to the Great Britain Sevens (GB7s) squad, competing globally on the HSBC World SVNS Series.
Club Career: On the domestic front, Matt was a standout performer in the FOSROC Super Series, starring for both the Ayrshire Bulls and Heriot’s Rugby—where he finished as the club’s top try-scorer during the 2023 Championship campaign. Following a stint with London Scottish, Matt’s elite domestic form earned him senior call-ups to Edinburgh Rugby in the United Rugby Championship (URC).
Dynamic Versatility: Smooth transitioner between 13 (Outside Centre), 15 (Fullback), and the blistering expanses of international Sevens.
Physicality & Line Breaking: Uses his tall frame to great advantage in contract, possessing a dangerous vertical leap under the high ball and a proven ability to break tackles in heavy traffic.
Defensive Work Rate: Refined by the high-exposure nature of the World SVNS Series, Davidson is a sharp, reliable open-field defender who tracks angles exceptionally well.
